Alternate US 19 is a major north-south corridor in Pinellas County, connecting to numerous regionally significant corridors – including Ulmerton Road (SR 688), East Bay Road (SR 686), SR 60, and US 19. The corridor is a hurricane evacuation route, and provides access to the various barrier islands in the southern part of the County.

The corridor is divided into two (2) study segments. The southern segment begins at Park Street North and ends at Belleair Road. This 11-mile segment traverses through the cities of Largo and Seminole. The northern segment is from Belleair Road to the Pinellas/Pasco County Line. The 17.9 mile northern segment traverses through the cities of Clearwater, Dunedin and Tarpon Springs, as well as unincorporated Palm Harbor.

The Alternate US 19 corridor study used FDOT’s Complete Streets policy to showcase how Complete Streets approaches can shape a corridor. The study, which began in December 2016, wrapped up in early 2019 and included technical work and data analysis, along with various opportunities for public involvement to discuss a vision for Alternate US 19 that make it accessible for all users.

Study Purpose and Need

This study has a two-pronged purpose:

To address near-term multimodal transportation needs through context sensitive solutions, and

To develop a long-term corridor vision that defines the goals and objectives and policy requirements to establish a more walkable, bicycle-friendly, urban environment.

Improvements to Alternate US 19 (SR 595) are needed to: improve congestion along the corridor; improve level of service at major intersection; reduce the number of pedestrian/bicycle crashes; and improve connectivity and accessibility to transit. In an effort to improve mobility and enhance safety within the corridor, several alternatives will be developed including short-term improvements like added bike lanes, lighting improvements or lengthening turn lanes; and long-term options such as lane repurposing or innovative intersection concepts like roundabouts.

Registration is now open for the Corridor Studies Alternatives Workshop onWednesday, September 19, 2018 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
