The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)<\/a> is conducting a Project Development & Environment (PD&E) study<\/a> for the proposed Westshore Regional Multimodal Center (WRMC) in the Westshore Business District in Tampa. The \u201cWestshore Multimodal Study and Strategic Transportation Plan\u201d<\/em>, completed in February 2012, identified four viable site locations (A, C, D, and S) – please see the project location map. This Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study has identified Site C, the redevelopment of a strip of parcels north of I-275 between Trask Street and Manhattan Avenue, as the recommended site for the WRMC. The study will determine the configuration, benefits, costs, and impacts of developing and operating a regional multimodal center at this location.<\/p>\n

Study Purpose and Need<\/h2>\n

The initial purpose of the Westshore Multimodal Study and Strategic Transportation Plan is to identify a viable site(s) within the core Westshore area that will provide connectivity for all existing and future planned modes of transportation in the Tampa Bay region and to improve the quality of the intermodal passenger connection in Tampa Bay so that regional mobility and accessibility by means other than personal motor vehicles are significantly increased. The center would facilitate improved connections between Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties maximizing the effectiveness of the transit in both counties and would enhance the existing and planned transportation systems in the entire Tampa Bay region. The impetus for the timing of this study was to help provide answers for some of the ongoing studies, including the I-275 at S.R. 60 Interchange design project.<\/p>\n

In addition to improving the connectivity of the existing and planned transportation modes in the Tampa Bay region, the Westshore Multimodal Center would also help revitalize the area(s) adjacent to the site(s) through Transit Oriented Development (TOD), as TOD would spur economic development through commercial, office and residential development.<\/p>\n
