South of Proposed SR 56 to Chancey Road

South of Proposed SR 56 to Chancey Road

Within the study area, US 301 is a two-lane undivided roadway with one 12-foot travel lane in each direction, paved shoulders and no sidewalks. The existing right-of-way is generally 100 feet wide and the posted speed limit ranges from 45 to 55 miles per hour.

The Preferred Build Alternative includes widening US 301 to a 4-lane divided roadway and consists of two typical sections. Both typical sections hold the existing western right-of-way line and expand the project corridor to the east. The first typical section begins south of the future SR 56 intersection and ends at Chancey Road. This proposed roadway segment will have two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a 54-foot wide grassed median, two 7-foot paved shoulders (also buffered bicycle lanes), as well as a 5-foot sidewalk along the eastern side and a 10-foot shared use path along the western side. In the future, this roadway segment could be expanded to 6 lanes by adding two lanes on the inside and reducing the median width.

The second typical section begins at Chancey Road and ends just south of the proposed realigned SR 39 and US 301 intersection. This proposed roadway segment will have two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a variable width (33-foot to 54-foot) grassed median, as well as 7-foot paved shoulders (also buffered bicycle lanes) and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides. This typical section would serve as a transition between the ultimate 6-lane section of US 301 to the north and the ultimate four-lane section of US 301 to the south.
